TESTDRIVE_01

THE ARRIVAL.

You wake up, wet and bruised, in the water.

You don't recall falling, but you recall a flash of bright light, and the next thing you know you're washing up on the shoreline. You can see two moons and a planet in the sky. Directly abovehead is a slash of oscillating lights that flash painfully bright with every passing second - and you witness a handful of silhouettes getting spit out of the lights, falling into the water with a loud splash.

It's a surprising sight; just as surprising is the fact that you're not alone.

A stranger you didn't notice approaching hauls you up onto your feet, checks you for injuries, and then you're lifted into a shuttle, where you're healed by the med techs on board. There are others like you who were pulled from the water and the sand, and they're in various states of healing. You're all soaked in seawater - and by the look of things, you're all equally at a loss about your situation.

An automated message keeps repeating over the PA system in English: "You are currently in Caius Allied Territory. Welcome to Alexandrina."

Where the hell are you?

You're now in Alexandrina, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE.

It isn't your lucky day.

Something, somewhere along the line, goes incredibly wrong. Rather than keeping you at the shores of Alexandrina, the rift pulls you in and spits you out in a place that's a lot less watery and clear. The first thing you come to is the taste of dirt and grime, and the hustle and bustle of a city that doesn't have an off-switch.

Overhead, there are high-rises and towers that go up further than your eyes can see. It seems neverending, and natural light struggles to filter through the metal. The shock only starts to fade away when you hear the sounds of a struggle not too far away from where you landed. Investigating will lead you to a group of Caia Maxus harassing a few Terrans on a back alleyway. The Terrans are trying to sidestep their way out of this (they'd rather not get involved in a fight), but the Caia Maxus far outnumber them and all escape routes have been blocked.

No one else is stepping in to intervene. If anything, the rest of the onlookers seem to be encouraging the rough treatment. So now you get to decide:

OPTION A | YOU STEP IN LIKE THE HERO YOU ARE. You step between the two parties to try and avoid an escalation. You don't want to start trouble, or maybe you do and this seems like a good reason to fish for a fight.

OPTION B | YOU LOOK THE OTHER WAY. This isn't your problem really, so without saying a word, you head for the other direction. The Terrans weren't asking for help anyway, so maybe they could handle it. Best hope nothing will let you regret your decision.

Choose wisely. You'll feel the effects of your choices sooner than you think. Regardless of what you decide though, the Hypatia Rescue Fleet 409 will locate you a few Terran hours later. They'll tell you they have no idea how you ended up in Koriba, that's never really happened before, but they're glad they managed to find you before anything major happened.

THE NIGHT OF.

It's a lot to take in. You're on an alien moon, looking out to a planet that looks a lot like Earth but isn't. You can see the storms swirling around, the deep blue of its own seas, as you listen to the crash and pull of the waves not far from where you stand. The stars are different here too - there are no constellations that you recognize immediately.

Some of the older locals are lingering outdoors with you, and they nod at you as you make your way around the cottages. Are you headed to the beach? You might find a few couples having a moment there. Are you headed back into the cottages? If you peer into some of the windows, you'll find entire families sitting together, or parents tucking their children to bed.

If you're headed into the woodsy areas that extend away from the beach, you might hear a rustling sound or two - from something too large to be another person.

Careful where you walk tonight. There's a reason for lights out being a thing.

WELCOME TO THE 409.

It's the morning after your quick orientation into the Alexandrina settlement, and everything looks dewy and homey — until you start hearing loud splashes, followed by shots firing off nearby. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a bunch of eldritch horrors falling from the rift abovehead. They stand at roughly ten meters tall each, lumbering out from the water with angry screeching and flailing limbs. They're already kicking up a mess at the shorelines, and upending some of the makeshift outposts lining the beach.

The locals are shooting at them to keep them away from the settlement borders. Most of them are adults, but some of the shooters are as young as fifteen or sixteen, and clearly used to the kickback of the firearms they're carrying. One of these shooters pushes you forward, tells you to get moving. Another hands you keys to a vehicle and points you in the direction of the fleet — every able adult needs to help in manning the patrol lines, they say. The keys fit into a hoverbike, which in turn is armed with blast guns up front.

"Get up in the air and help the guys out," the stranger urges you. "We don't have as many men as we used, to. Get going, get going!"

...Maybe those bikes come with a how-to manual? On the bright side, at least you're not alone in trying to figure these bikes out.

NOTHING WASTED, NOTHING THROWN.

The beach is saved! You're drenched in monster blood, there's sand in places you didn't realize you even had, and your bike is in some form of damage after those first few crucial minutes of getting the hang of riding them.

Now comes the cleanup, and your character is armed with large chainsaws and buckets. The creatures need to be chopped down to smaller sizes before they can be properly incinerated, and everyone's kindly asked to suit up and get to chopping!

There are small stalls and tents lined up along the beach for various purposes to help with the process. There are refreshment tents for when the sun heat gets to be too much; there are portable incinerator ovens, which burn the creatures' parts down into fertilizer (no point letting it go to waste, hey!), there are shower tents for when you're done with the hacking and sawing, and at the far end of the beach, away from the gore and the carnage, is a beach barbeque bonanza.

From the way people act, this is a normal day in the 409.

So why not grab a saw, chop up some monster flesh, and have yourself a nice beef-flavored something? You've earned it today.

( arrival )
( she'd tried to pull away, altogether surprised, no jumpy by the sudden arrival of this stranger, uncomfortable by the strange hands on her. but they hadn't relented so eventually vanessa had, not bothering to fight as she was pulled to the transport, sitting uncomfortably still as she was checked.

she has no fight left, no effort to ask the questions that should be buzzing around her head. where am i? what is happening to me? instead she's unresponsive, almost as if she doesn't hear the message over the pa. almost as if she hasn't noticed anyone else in the transport with her )

( the night of )
( vanessa gets outside to simply breathe. it's all overwhelming, once some of her senses begin to kick in. being ushered along again after the transport starts to wake her and she takes in a little of the information given, though understands none of it. the feeling inside her begins to build, the confusion, the fear, almost until vanessa feels like she's suffocating.

though she goes outside to escape, to try and breathe, it's still overwhelmig. this place looks like nothing she's seen before and, even though she isn't overly familiar with constellations, these don't look like her stars. a few names prick at her memories but she doesn't recognise them.

it has her nearly stumbling as she walks, trying to move herself away from any of the friendly locals. what vanessa wants is peace -- a quiet, isolated place. but even outside there's too much information -- outside is something new, something harder to handle than a closed off room. there's even more stimuli and it shows in her expression. surprised, confused. overwhelmed.

vanessa looks lost, feeling it deeply. where am i? what is happening to me? )

( welcome to the 409 )
( one night of sleep, though how much vanessa actually slept is debatable. a small segment of the information had settled in, though it still took her brain a few moments to remember that she was in another place when she looked around.

with everyone ushered about it doesn't take long for someone to send her on her way. and that's when the gunfire occurs. vanessa had made it outside just in time to see something fall, hearing the first few shots. she's frowning, not properly able to see what it is, but curious all the same. she barely says the words aloud before a gun is pushed into her hands and vanessa is pushed along.

she knows how to shoot though the gun that ethan had taught her with was very different from this one. despite the surprise, she's still walking along, though the gun remains limply in her hands rather being put to use. it's all too fast and too weird. vanessa doesn't know how to respond, her brain lagging behind a little, trying to catch up to all of the information.

and then another noise has her turning, jumping as she does )

What is happening?

( was this normal? there was such a response as if it had happened before but-- no, that was just strange even by her standards )

409.

[As much as grabbing a weapon known to be effective against invading attackers would be the smart thing to do, some people are so battle obsessed that the idea of fighting with anything but their own strength is quite frankly insane.

Well, alright, maybe that's not a universal experience.

But either way, Cell's engaged with one of the attacking creatures. Not to protect the people here, or to assist in any kind of effort to play the hero. He just wants to test himself, especially now that the feeling of having lost so much of his power is evident. What would have once been enough to decisively end a battle is now simply a means of stunning the great beast, blasting its leg with streak of light that does nothing but force it to stumble a bit, rather than cause any real damage.

More than anything, it's just frustrating him.
]

Well, this could be going better...

[Lend a hand? Hopefully you were smarter than he is and actually have something substantial. Like a vehicle mounted gun.]

nothing wasted.

[If you're around the shower area at all, you might just catch this guy coming out of them as well. He walks right in and out as he was, given what looks like armour on his body is simply his exoskeleton, and even the pair of black wings on his back flicker a little in an effort to dry themselves off. If you're close enough you might even get sprayed with water droplets!

But if not, then you might notice he's actually wounded on his abdomen. His big stupid plan of fighting the monsters from early was...a big stupid plan, so injuries were to be expected, but instead of worrying or trying to tend to it at all he's simply observing it and looking...frustrated. Not the frustration you'd expect from someone with an injury, but more in line with discovering your fridge suddenly stopped working.
]

...what a joke. Once I could've easily regenerated something like this without even thinking about it.

Midoriya Izuku | Boku no Hero Academia

[personal profile] thunderingpeace 2018-07-31 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Night of

[For the umpteenth time that day, Izuku Midoriya was left alone to think.

Not a great thing, all things considered, with his mind loving to work overtime and run a million miles a second, rivaling his own speed with full cowling, or Iida's speed with reciproburst activated. If he'd had a notebook (he'd asked for one, but nobody was able to supply him with anything; he couldn't sketch, write, or take note of anything with his hands, so he was left to stew. Stewing was never a good thing, and led his feet to wandering and his mouth to moving.

Wandering, in this case, to what looked like a beach.

All it did was make him think of home. Of the beach he'd cleaned right before he'd gained One For All, and...everything, really.

This was another world. Another planet.

How did he even get here? He'd woken up, still in his nightclothes (a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt that simply said "Shirt" on it) and ready to go down to the kitchens for something to drink, and then sat down on the couch in the common room to relax for a bit before going back to bed, and he...did he doze off? Regardless, when he came to, he was in a body of water, in a place he'd never been before in his life.

And with everything else he'd learned today, he just had more and more questions that heaped onto each other, piling up until they just overflowed out his mouth in quickly-spoken, low-toned words:]

Did a quirk send me here? The technology used here is far beyond anything that I've seen, not even the support department at UA makes anything that advanced. And what about that planet? is there a way to get back? Will I be able to get back? How will I--

[His thoughts descend into gibberish as he keeps muttering to himself, lost to the couples on the beach with him, the night, or...anything, really.]

[ Croix's generally got a good head for technology, but this is slightly beyond even her. The untagged voice speaks to a magitech origin - that said, sufficiently advanced tech is indistinguishable from magic, anyway. She needs more time to get accustomed to the advancements of this world.

Might as well start. She'd been meaning to renew her dating profile, anyway. ]

SouthStar: Evening, all.
SouthStar: I understand there has been a slew of new arrivals lately - anyone particularly interesting?

B ▸ THE ARRIVAL

Where the hell are they? Alexandrina. The name of the place is self-evident, though it rings no bells in Croix's memory. She keeps a calm demeanor and rational approach; being a magical engineer, she's quite used to life involving a certain level of upheaval, including seemingly random appearances to and fro.

After the med techs have finished with their check-ups, Croix excuses herself from their frantic attentions and slips toward the pilots, her ears open to the surrounding conversations. She's not interested in causing trouble, not yet - but perhaps she can at least get a glance at a map.

[ Keeping one's head is the most important part of being in a new situation. All may go to hell around one, but the energy can be captured and channelled, and observation the key to putting it to use. Croix's midnight walk serves dual purposes: one, to get a better look at Alexandrina now that the chaos of the day has faded; and two, to lend her some space to think. She keeps her distance from the couples, idly willing them to get a room.

Turns out, she wasn't the only one with the same idea. There's a teenager hardly older than one of her students wandering the beach, having quite a time getting his thoughts in order. He doesn't seem to realize they don't take much proximity to overhear.

Croix's always had a soft spot for students, and little patience for noise. The two traits blend in glorious harmony, resulting in a desire to tell this boy, for the love of the Nine, to shut up. She clears her throat and speaks gently, tone belying her feelings. ]

She sits across from the catatonic woman with one leg thrown over the other, simply observing her and the other passengers in the shuttle. Is the woman conscious? She seems to be, at the very least, though at this point it's anyone's game.

Might as well give it a shot. No business relationship ever got started without an extended hand. She smiles gently, though with a gleam in her eye. ]

But you're right. I just...I mumble to gather my thoughts. Um. Sorry. Kacchan always told me it was a bad habit--She doesn't know who that even is, what are you doing

The Alexandrina, likewise, means nothing to Chariot. The blunette peers her head down the hallway, having tried and failed to make sense of all of this. What could have brought her to this place? A spell?

And, for that matter, what is this place? And where is it?

She pushes her glasses up, and then she catches sight of something else: of light violet hair, so familiar, even facing away from her. Chariot stops, stares, and her mouth hangs open for a whole second.

Then, she blurts out before she can think if she should speak at all: "Croix?"

Roman wants to say that he's seen weirder, but if he's being honest (which is rare), he hasn't.

It's scary really, how different this place is from Remnant. In almost every way he could thing of. Technology, beings, wildlife. It was upsetting in a way. He didn't like looking up at the night sky and not seeing the shattered moon he was so used to.

Though, he supposed, the fact that this was the alternative to the digestive tract of a grimm, was a plus. He was alive, somehow, and that meant something surely. He could still survive, and if nothing else, he was good at that.

But it was still a lot to take in, so he's found a spot at the beach and is looking out at the water. At least until he looks up.]

She wasn't sure what to think. The various couples, the strange feeling unease of something being out in the dark...It all reminded her a little too much of the Lake of the Departed; she kept expecting the moon to turn into the sunset or something.

No one seemed keen to really talk with her either, but then, Yuri had grown used to being essentially invisible, but it was frustrating. She felt tired and confused, and there was this guy mumbling to himself...

Yeah, sorry, this dude's an awkward nerd, I'm so sorry you chose him to talk to.

[ It’s a shock to the overall senses. He remembers seeing pictures of the sea, in screen projected images and grainy footage. He understood that it was more water than he had ever seen in his life in one massive space, but being plunged into it was quiet a different experience than just seeing it second hand. It was cold and so salty. It clung to his skin, burned his nose and made all the clothes he was wearing ten times heavier than they normally were. Which made Vash realize one more thing, he also knew the theory of swimming, but that was just a theory. His legs and arms don’t seem to want to work together and he flails miserably, smacking a few faces along the way. He inhales a lungful of water and chocks. He wasn’t really hurt or needed medical attention, but now he just might.

It’s only a very short swim to safety but he is not nailing it by any means as he sinks. ]

Not the keys to a bike that looks like that. He never could figure out Wolfwood’s simple two wheeler. How the hell would he manage this?

With a patent goofy smile, he throws the keys up in the air and catches them. It’s a slick trick, maybe very deceptive on how well this will actually go. ]

First time for everything, right? Maybe the two thousand six hundred and seventh time is the charm? At least there’s no road to run off!

On the one hand, he knows that food has to come from somewhere, and even the fluffiest and cutest of animals will often meet that fate. He notices his fellow voluneetolds setting about their task and sputters. ]

It's a little easier to feel okay about openly staring at people getting cornered by a gaggle of aggressive aliens, though. They're cornered in an alley -- mistake number one, Athena thinks -- and she pauses, trying to decide if it's worth it to get involved. Her inclination is to move on because it isn't really her business, but she's still thinking about it, so she's not completely sold yet.]

ii. 409.
[This situation, on the other hand, is considerably more palatable than watching some randos get threatened on some side street. Athena doesn't know the person giving her commands, but they're commands, and she knows how to follow those very well.

While a part of her would rather be in the fray with her plasma sword in hand, she's got enough experience with Stingrays and Moon Zoomies that she's just as comfortable using the hoverbike. The controls are easy enough for her to figure out, and she zips ahead a bit, though she has to turn the wheel hard to avoid smashing into someone whose own bike is stalled.]

What the hell are you doing? You're in everyone's way, get going!

i. what the hell is kansas, anyway? (option a)

[ There was a time when Kanan Jarrus would absolutely not stick his neck out for anyone. Nope, nobody. Really! He would've let the two groups of strangers just... have it out. None of his business, not his fight, yadda yadda.

But, really, these terrans are so badly outnumbered and outgunned (so to speak), that he can't just stand by and watch them get bullied. So - sure, why not, he'll probably regret this in the next ten minutes but for now, the tall guy with the bright green eyes and jaunty goatee puts himself between the terrans and their bullies. ]

Hey, lay off, will ya? There's enough room here for everybody.

ii. the 409

[ Rather than being perturbed about being handed a speeder bike, Kanan looks rather excited. Some action! Protecting innocents! A little flashy flying! This is right up his alley.

Observers might note that he gets the hang of the thing really fast - like he's flown them, or something like them, before. Not just flown, but good at it, too. He might pause near someone who looks like they're having more difficulty - just to point out some basics. ]

Just open up the throttle - like so - and go!
